Mackerel tournament
The rain and wind couldn’t stop my clients from having a fun and productive day. They were fishing in the SKANSKA Fishing Tournament and the target was Spanish Mackerel. Each team could weigh in their five heaviest mackerel.
My first stop was at a spot where In have been producing big mackerel, trout, blue fish, ladyfish, flounder, shark and jacks. The action started off slow but after about 1 hour the fish started chewing and we caught alot of fish but only 1 was a mackerel. Since the mack bite was slow I ran to my B spot and we could see them busting the top of the water as we approached. We threw into the schools and would hook up instantly. Most of them small to medium size so after we got 5 of them in the boat, I decided to leave the schools and fish deeper for bigger fish. The decision paid off, they landed 4 big mackerel not to mention several big jacks. I was hoping to get one more big mackerel but the lightning storms forced me to run back to the ramp. We headed to the scales with 4 big mackerel and 1 small one. The total weight was 16 .5 pounds. My clients won 3rd place which paid $500.00.
